Steps for decluttering your home

Did you know that removing clutter within your home can reduce stress, help you to be more productive, and improve your mood and self-esteem?

Life can be busy and often we feel overwhelmed at the thought of where to start with having a clear-out and put it off. However, there are many benefits to decluttering your home. These include less cleaning, less to organise and ultimately less stress.

Here are a few steps to help you:

  • Step 1: Decide exactly what you want to declutter
Make your list of what needs organising. Be sure to focus on small spaces such as a drawer, cupboard, or shelf, rather than a whole room.

  • Step 2: Plan your attack
Jot down a plan for your day by writing down times for each task you want to tackle. Have a walk through your home and decide which jobs should take priority. Keeping to time will help you stay on track and ensure you have enough time to accomplish everything you want to.

  • Step 3: Three pile rule
Keep, donate/sell, and discard - these three piles will help you when sorting through items. The thought of unwanted items going to a good home can give you a little boost making it easier to let go.

  • Step 4: Choose what to give away
Letting go of things you no longer need or use, can be difficult. Remember you don't have to part with everything - making a box of "memories" with those sentimental items can help with this step.

  • Step 5: Choose what to keep
Try not to see decluttering as getting rid of everything - it's an opportunity to organise everything you want to keep and make it easier for you to see what you have. If you are finding it hard to give anything away, have a think about whether that item brings you joy, if not then it should be in the "go" pile.

  • Step 6: Be quick to get rid
Don't put off getting rid of your items due to go. You don't want a pile sitting in the corner for weeks, and you definitely don't want them making their way back into the cupboards!

  • Step 7: Make the most of storage
Storage solutions don't have to be hidden away - pretty baskets and stackable drawers can give a clean look around the home. Go through the house and decide what can be stored away such as bedding, toiletries, towels, electronics, and toys. You may be surprised at how many under-utilised spaces you have already.

  • Step 8: Celebrate your achievements
Whether it's with a well-earned glass of bubbly or a large slice of cake, make sure you take a moment to celebrate your progress and enjoy your newfound space thanks to a decluttered home!
