Keeping the kids entertained over the six-week summer holidays isn’t always easy, especially with the cost-of-living making it even more difficult. Below is a list of fun, inexpensive ideas to do over the break.
Local events
Your local council, or even social media focusing on your area, and can provide information on things to do in the nearby with a lot of them being free of charge. You may find that there are things going on that you weren’t aware of.
Libraries
Not only is the library free, they often run clubs or events for children. Some libraries run Lego clubs, Storytimes, board game events, and even puppet shows. You can then get your child to pick a book to take home and read over the summer.
Museums
We have many museums and art galleries across the country. Most of these are free, or ask for a small donation. Museums are a great way to get the kids learning and interested in all sorts including, nature, history, science, and space.
Parks, walks, and woods
Not only is exercise great for your mental health, getting out with the family can be a fun, free day out! Long walks don’t have to be boring; you can hunt for bugs, pick blackberries, or build a den. Some walking trails have special events during the holidays aimed at kids which can mean the kids get a go at orienteering.
What if it rains?
In England, the summer holidays don’t necessarily mean the weather is going to be warm and dry, therefore, we have included some ideas for the wetter weather too:
Get baking
Most kids love to get involved in kitchen activities – quite often the messier the better! Have a look through your cupboards and see what you can create. If you don’t have much rice crispy cakes are usually an inexpensive way to create a tasty treat!
Board games
Dig out the board games, get all the family, and invite some friends over to play. If your kids aren’t a fan of board games, you could try a games console tournament as an alternative.
Arts and crafts
There are so many ideas for children to spend hours doing arts and crafts. Have a look at Pinterest for some inspiration, or let the kids be free and use their imagination to create something wonderful!
Whatever you end up doing over the summer holidays, we hope you have a great time.
