Self-Care Guide to Support your Mental Health

10th October is World Mental Health Day and no better time to talk about how mental health can affect how we think, feel, act and relate to others. Mental health includes emotional, psychological, and social well-being.

There are ways in which everyone should be caring for their physical and mental health, even small acts of self-care can have a big impact on your overall health and quality of life.

Below are some tips to help you:

  • Eat healthy, regular meals and drink lots of water
A balanced diet can help your boost energy and improve your focus through the day

  • Sleep is essential
Have a sleep schedule to ensure you’re getting enough sleep. Make sure you turn off electronics as blue light from devices can make it more difficult to fall asleep

  • Exercise regularly
Small amounts of exercise add up, just 30 minutes of walking can boost your mood and improve your health

  • Set goals and prioritise
Not everything needs to be done right away. Make a decision on what needs to be done now, and what can wait. It is okay to say “no” if you feel as if you are taking on too much. Focus on all you have achieved – not what you have been unable to get done

  • Do something relaxing
There are several meditation apps and wellness programs that can include muscle relaxation and breathing exercises

  • Practice gratitude and focus on being positive
Remind yourself of all the things you are grateful for, write them down so you can re-read them

  • Keep in touch
Reach out to friends and family who can provide emotional support and practical help

Self-care can be different for everyone and it may take a bit of trial and error to find out what works for you. It is important to mention that self-care isn’t a cure for a mental illness, but understanding and managing triggers with coping techniques can help.
